The Project

The project site was located along a busy towpath corridor, with multiple utility services, including gas, fresh and foul water, Sky, and oil lines, which required careful consideration during all works.

The scope of the project included soft bank protection, finished with topsoil, and piling to ensure long-term bank stability and erosion control. The bank was in a particularly poor condition, with embayments and exposed services causing hazards to members of the public.

The works were undertaken from floating plant; wide beam crane pontoon which could also take a 5t digger, tug and hopper. This meant all the materials could be brought to site in one go, which on a remote section with no loading points saved time and money. The crane could load materials onto the rear of the towpath lift the 300kg rock rolls into position.

The areas were finished with puddling clay and topsoil before regrading the towpath.

Habitat Creation Coney Meadows, Droitwich

Coney Meadows is part of a nationwide project to restore the UK’s wetlands. Since the 17th century, large areas of reedbeds have been stripped and converted into agricultural land, massively reducing the number of habitats available for wetland animals.

Changing the Shape of the River Derwent, Derby

Following the storm seasons of 2023 & 2024, the EA set out to review its impact on the UK’s waterways. The River Derwent in Derby was flagged after a sonar scan of its navigation identified a scour hole – a direct result of heavy rainfall pushing sediment downstream.
