An old brick culvert which is still integral to water management along the Shropshire Union canal needed a new manhole constructing to facilitate safe inspection.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust to carry out essential heritage restoration works on a historic lock wall. The project involved repairing a bulge in the brickwork, located below the coping level, which had begun to affect several areas of the structure.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust to repair a failing waterway wall at Batchworth Moorings on the Grand Union Canal.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust, for a design and build solution for installing access steps downto the canal at a number of locations. All materials and plant had to be floated to site due to their remote locations and these boats doubled up as welfare and safe plant storage.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust and Kier to assist with the emergency works at Marbury to stabilise the embankment. A 40m section of sheet piled washwall had failed leading to erosion of a narrow embankment between the canal & river. The bank had to be repaired by re-piling the washwall & installing rip-rap at the toe of the rear slope, without allowing further sections of the bank to collapse. 

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust, Kier & JJF to assist with a bank slippage along the canal in Skipton. A 30m stretch of canal bank had slipped into the canal causing an obstruction and blocking the canal to navigation.

Based at Calf Heath Reservoir in Staffordshire, Greensforge SailingClub was facing problems of weathering and water erosion to its mooring and terracing. To ensure that visitors and club members could continue to use the facilities safely, The Rothen Group was chosen to complete 40 metres of bank stabilisation works, including a new concrete walkway to allow safe access for launching the sailing dinghies.

The Aire and Calder Navigation has grown over the years and today transports significant amounts of raw materials across West Yorkshire. Following an embankment collapse, The Rothen Group were called on to carry out urgent repairworks and prevent a worsening situation.

Coney Meadows is part of a nationwide project to restore the UK’s wetlands. Since the 17th century, large areas of reedbeds have been stripped and converted into agricultural land, massively reducing the number of habitats available for wetland animals.

Following the storm seasons of 2023 & 2024, the Environmental Agency set out to review its impact on UK’s waterways. The River Derwent in Derby was flagged after a sonar scan of its navigation identified a scour hole – a direct result of heavy rainfall pushing sediment downstream. 

Our client, ABC Leisure Group, run 21 marinas nationwide. The access road bridge at Gayton Marina had failed, meaning the marina was inaccessible and users had nowhere to park. We needed to provide a fix with a quick turnaround.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust to assist with designing and building a new replacement timber lift bridge on the Oxford Canal.

The Rothen Group have worked with Canal & River Trust, Environment Agency and local River Authorities including River Colne Catchment Action Network, River Stort and Woosh Canoe Club to manage and remove invasive species.

Proposed piling works had ceased due to the presence of water voles on the bank to be impacted and a lack of habitat on the offside. The works were required due to severe leaks and the potential to impact neighbouring properties.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust and Kier to assist with ‘Transforming the Trent Valley Towpath Project’ at Shardlow & Willington. The towpath needed improving and upgrading with soft bank protection and timber sleeper retaining walls required too. The works were over 2.75km within a Conservation & Heritage Area.

management of weed along 20 miles of London’s waterways for 7months

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust to assist with repairing and replacing a 250m stretch of well used canal towpath in Hinckley.

The Rothen Group were approached by Galldris Construction Ltd at the ECI stage to deliver the marine elements of their ambitious redevelopment works to the Glaxo Smith Klein factory site in Greenford Green, London. 

The Rothen Group were asked by JN Bentley and the Environment Agency to assist with upgrading a lock landing on River Great Ouse. 

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust to assist with erosion control along the Chesterfield Canal. Over a 130m stretch of canal bank had slipped into the canal which put the towpath at risk.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust, Kier & JJF to assist with a bank slippage long the canal in Skipton. A 30m stretch of canal bank had slipped into the canal causing an obstruction and blocking the canal to navigation.

The Rothen Group were asked by JN Bentley and the Environment Agency to assist with the de-shoaling works across numerous sites located on the River Nene & River Great Ouse.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust and Kier to assist with the emergency works at Marbury to stabilise the embankment. A 40m section of sheet piled washwall had failed leading to erosion of a narrow embankment between the canal & river. The bank had to be repaired by re-piling the washwall & installing rip-rap at the toe of the rear slope, without allowing further sections of the bank to collapse.

The Rothen Group were asked by JN Bentley and the Environment Agency to assist with the stabilisation of the existing asbestos piles along the River Cam. Over 500m of the asbestos piles had failed and a smart solution was required to stop the banks from collapsing.

The Rothen Group were asked by Canal & River Trust and Kier to assist with repairing several sections of piling and washwall that lay within a Heritage Area. Several separate sections of washwall had either collapsed or rotated with sections of stone coping having fallen into the canal along with sandbag walling. Over 220m of washwall needed to be repaired, whilst the towpath and canal remained open.

The Rothen Group were approached by Galldris Construction Ltd at the ECI stage to deliver the marine elements of their ambitious redevelopment works to the Glaxo Smith Klein factory site in Greenford Green, London.

The Rothen Group have worked with Canal & River Trust since 2019 to assist with the management of weed along 20miles of London’s waterways for 7months each year. As part of the project innovation, we successfully compost some of the floating weed including floating pennywort.
