Value:
After a competitive tender, Hart District Council awarded TheRothen Group repair works to a ditch and culvert along a busy footpath, adjacent to a large junior school in Fleet.

The Project
The works involved obtaining an emergency FRAP, due to the high Health & Safety risk to the public, as the footpath was significantly undermined.
As well as managing the towpath, permits had to be obtained for locating a site compound and skip on public land. Utilities were present on site, requiring rigorous CAT and Genny scanning and a permit to dig protocol to be followed, ahead of works commencing.
The site had several logisitical difficulties due to predominately being located along a busy footpath used by the local school, so deliveries had to be timed outside of peak traffic and pedestrian periods.
There was also no vehicle access to the majority of the site, so small plant had to be deployed to ensure the footpath was not blocked, but manual handling could be kept to a minimum.
The works involved removing failed concrete slabs and debris from the culvert before installing temporary coffer dams and overpumping to ensure a dry working area. Shuttering was then installed ahead of reinstating the concrete aprons. Several smaller repairs were undertaken with concrete slabs along other sections. The undermined footpath was then repaired with new a handrail fitted.

FEATURED CASE STUDY
Habitat Creation Coney Meadows, Droitwich
Coney Meadows is part of a nationwide project to restore the UK’s wetlands. Since the 17th century, large areas of reedbeds have been stripped and converted into agricultural land, massively reducing the number of habitats available for wetland animals.

FEATURED CASE STUDY
Changing the Shape of the River Derwent, Derby
Following the storm seasons of 2023 & 2024, the EA set out to review its impact on the UK’s waterways. The River Derwent in Derby was flagged after a sonar scan of its navigation identified a scour hole – a direct result of heavy rainfall pushing sediment downstream.
