Bank protection works along River Tern
The Rothen Group were asked to undertake some bank protection works along the River Tern for a home owner whose garden was disappearing into the river. The section of bank was on a meander in the river resulting in areas collapsing on regular occasions. As part of the works, the Environment Agency were consulted to ensure the works were not going to adversely affect the river or its ecology. Using our experience, a mixture of hard and soft bank protection was suggested, with sheet piles used along the worst affected section and nicospan for the remaining section. This was welcomed by the EA, especially the biodiversity team who commented that the pre-planted coir rolls used infront of the nicospan, providing excellent habitat for wildlife in the river. The works were carried out using our low impact mini digger from the banks. These are all fitted with bio-oil as standard to ensure no pollution of watercourses, especially in an ecologically sensitive area such as River Tern.
