Droughts are becoming a normal part of British summers. As of August 2026, almost three-quarters of England is in an official drought due to a combination of very low rainfall and higher temperatures.

In the worst cases, nutrient-rich, slow-moving water creates favourable conditions for algal blooms, which block sunlight and cause oxygen levels to fall further when algae die and decompose. In severe cases, this can kill fish and other aquatic life across a section of the canal.

Canals thread their way through cities, farmland, and fragmented habitats, often functioning as wildlife corridors. During a drought, they can be one of the last remaining aquatic habitats when ponds, ditches, and smaller streams have dried out.
